Florida tops U.S. shark attack data — here’s what that means for Miami

South Florida’s coastline remains a top destination despite centuries of shark activity, with Miami Beach reporting relatively low numbers

Florida’s beaches have long been a magnet for sunseekers and thrill-seekers alike, but a recent data analysis by Tideschart reveals a less-talked-about fact: the Sunshine State leads the nation in recorded shark attacks. The data, pulled from shark research and EPA coastal records, shows that New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County alone has logged 277 shark attacks since 1642 — more than quadruple the next closest beach.

Shark attack stats

While North and Central Florida dominate the top of the list, South Florida’s beaches also make notable appearances. Palm Beach, Jupiter Beach Park, and Riviera Beach rank within the top ten, while Miami Beach comes in lower, tied for 12th place with 17 recorded attacks.

Still, experts and wildlife officials emphasize that the risk of a shark attack is extremely low, and most interactions are non-lethal. With millions of beach visits each year, these numbers represent a minute fraction of activity on Florida’s shores.

Keeping Miami’s beaches safe and enjoyable

Local authorities, including the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, recommend simple precautions to minimize risk of shark attacks. These include avoiding swimming at dawn or dusk, staying clear of schools of fish, and swimming in groups.

In Miami Beach, lifeguard presence and public awareness campaigns have helped maintain safety, even during peak tourist seasons. As part of a broader effort, community outreach and education have also played a key role in helping both residents and visitors enjoy our beautiful coastline with confidence.

It’s important to remember that Florida’s coastal ecosystems, including its shark populations, are part of what makes our state ecologically rich and unique. With respect and awareness, recreation and marine life can coexist safely.
