How a near-death experience shifted my outlook on goals and the journey of life
Sometimes we set goals and take deliberate steps toward achieving them, believing that the culmination of daily efforts will lead us to success. But what if reaching those goals isn’t as important as how we get there?
When the journey becomes more important than the destination
Anxiety, worries, and irrational fears all stem from uncertainty. But is there anything that’s truly certain? Life is short, and the stress of daily routines—making appointments, dealing with traffic, and feeling pressured by time—often makes us lose sight of the bigger picture.
This past week, I had a moment of reckoning that made me question everything. I was involved in a terrifying car accident, one that felt like the world was ending. A large truck carrying a heavy excavator T-boned my car with such force that the impact was deafening. The airbags deployed instantly, and in that chaotic moment, I lost all sense of what had happened. The shock, the sound, the loss of visibility—it was overwhelming.
Learning to trust that everything works out in life
Just minutes before the accident, I was struggling to find my destination. Google Maps had been frustratingly inaccurate, leading me in the wrong direction and making me late for an appointment. My frustration was building, and I found myself losing sight of a fundamental belief: All things are always working out for me.
But in the aftermath of the accident, I had to surrender control and rely on those around me to help me piece together what had just happened. It was a reminder that no matter how much we plan, there will always be moments when life forces us to pause, reflect, and simply trust the process.
The truth is, we don’t have full control over every aspect of our journey. What we do have control over is how we react, how we grow, and how we find meaning in even the most unexpected moments. Is reaching a goal truly worth it if you can’t enjoy the journey?
