From honoring Jose “Rene” Infante to celebrating Miami’s farming roots, the GMCVB’s Farmers Month continues to highlight the heart of our community
Every November, Miami comes alive with gratitude — not just for the season, but for the people who keep our community thriving from the ground up. Farmers Month, an initiative proudly created by the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB), is back once again to celebrate the growers, entrepreneurs, and local markets that make Miami’s food culture and community spirit so unique.
For Calle Ocho News, this celebration feels personal. We covered Farmers Month last year, spotlighting the people and places that make Miami’s agricultural community flourish. This year, the tradition continues — and it comes with a heartfelt reminder of how one man’s legacy helped build a cornerstone of South Dade: Jose “Rene” Infante, founder of Redland Market Village.

Honoring a Miami pioneer: Jose “Rene” Infante’s lasting legacy
On Friday, November 8, 2024, the community gathered for a historic street naming ceremony in South Dade, led by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins. The event, held at the corner of Southwest 137th Avenue and 244th Street near Redland Market Village, honored Jose “Rene” Infante, whose entrepreneurial vision and dedication transformed the region.
Infante’s journey began when he immigrated to the U.S. as a teenager through Operation Pedro Pan, a chapter that would shape his lifelong mission of service and opportunity. In 1987, he founded Redland Market Village, Inc., turning a small flea market into a thriving local hub for farmers, families, and small businesses.
During the ceremony, Commissioner Cohen Higgins highlighted the rare and remarkable nature of this recognition: “A supermajority vote from the Board of County Commissioners is necessary to waive the requirement that a street honoree must be deceased. In this case, a unanimous vote was received. That shows the remarkable legacy Jose ‘Rene’ Infante has built in South Dade.”
Redland Market Village: Where community and culture flourish
Located at 24420 South Dixie Hwy in Princeton, Redland Market Village remains the beating heart of Miami’s farming community — a place where fresh produce, Latin flavors, and multicultural spirit come together under one roof. During Farmers Month, this historic site takes center stage once again as part of the GMCVB’s ongoing effort to promote Miami’s agricultural heritage.
Visitors can enjoy locally grown fruits and vegetables, live music, artisan goods, and a community atmosphere that captures the essence of South Florida. For many families, Redland Market Village isn’t just a market — it’s a tradition that connects generations, celebrates cultural pride, and keeps local entrepreneurship alive.
A celebration of service, soil, and spirit
Farmers Month is more than a campaign — it’s a tribute to the values of hard work, unity, and innovation that define Miami. As the city honors figures like Jose “Rene” Infante and the communities they helped shape, it also reinforces what makes Miami truly special: its people.
