Back pain is a condition that affects our Latino community in Miami on a daily basis.
The reality is that back pain is one of the most common causes of visits to the emergency room and / or doctors. It is estimated that 80% of the population will feel back pain at some point in their life.
There are countless causes and reasons why we feel back pain. Among them are lifting heavy objects or sitting incorrectly for long periods of time at home or work. It can also be that you have suffered a trauma such as a fall, car accident, or sports injury. Repetitive movements such as reaching for your wallet or work bag always with the same arm, sleeping in our stomach, exercising incorrectly and being overweight among other things can all affect your mobility.
The first thing we must recognize are the activities that we carry out with our body on a daily basis. If we need to lift something heavy, let's look for help, if help is not available use your legs instead of your spine to lift. The largest and strongest muscles of our bodies are found in our hips and legs. Before lifting, bend your knees and tighten your stomach to protect the spine. Practice this daily, even if your lifting something as light as a paper from the floor. Make minor changes to your habits such as choosing an alternate arm with which you carry your briefcase or purse. A good practice to accustom yourself to is using a lumbar support in the work chair. If you do not have lumbar support, you can roll a towel and place it between the chair and your lower back to support your spine. For every 20 minutes sitting, stand up for 20 seconds these 20 seconds will affect your productivity at work and can reduce stress on the spine. Avoid sleeping on your stomach and always try to sleep on your back with a pillow under your knees or on your side with a pillow between your knees. Obesity or carrying a lot of weight in the stomach area can put a lot of pressure on your spine. This causes our muscles to work overtime creating muscle spasms and pain.
