Pro soccer player for Charlotte FC, Anton Walkes, 25, dies in a boat crash in Miami, Florida
The entire public is welcome to attend "Anton Walkes Celebration of Life" on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Bank of America Stadium, the club announced on Saturday. The squad noted that Anton "shared his love of football and life with everyone around him" and was a "great parent, friend, and teammate."
We kindly urge you to join us in reflecting on the influence Anton Walkes had on each of us. On Wednesday about 3 p.m., a boat crashed close to Miami Marine Stadium's pool. Walkes passed away early on Thursday. On one of the two ships that were involved in the incident, he was a passenger. He was discovered unresponsive and brought ashore to be revived before being sent to the hospital. The 25-year-old was found by rescuers on Biscayne Bay and was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead from his injuries. The 25-year-old was a member of Charlotte FC's debut MLS season.
What happened near the Miami Marine Stadium basin that killed the player?
According to preliminary investigations by the Miami Herald, the accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon as the player was riding his personal watercraft nearby a boat ramp in the Miami Marine Stadium.
Anton Walkes was enjoying his day off at a popular spot for water activities on Virginia Key. The personal watercraft was an 11 ft Yamaha operated by Marie-Luise Taubert, a 32-year-old woman from Germany who was not hurt in the incident. The watercraft crashed with a boat that was 46 ft in length and occupied by five people, including its captain, Eric Walter Olsson, a 69-year-old from Miami. No arrests have been made in connection with the accident. Anton Walkes, 25, was unconscious when he was pulled from the water and was later pronounced dead at 3:25 a.m. on Thursday at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
For years, congestion and reckless boating have been a major concern for the area. The report doesn't mention who was at fault for the accident or if anyone was arrested or charged, but it appears that the waterways were congested at the time of the incident.
