Angel Diaz leads Miami’s Parking collaboration with SpotHero to alleviate congestion

Miami Parking Authority Director of Operations Angel Diaz shares insights on this collaboration's role in reducing traffic congestion and streamlining the Miami parking experience

In response to Miami’s high congestion levels, Miami Parking Authority Director Angel Diaz has announced a new collaboration with SpotHero, aiming to ease traffic through reserved parking. Currently ranked as the eighth most congested city globally, Miami faces considerable delays for drivers seeking parking at events and high-traffic areas. Diaz’s strategy with SpotHero introduces a streamlined, pre-reservation parking experience, promising to alleviate these challenges for both locals and visitors.

How SpotHero will transform the parking experience

This new initiative will empower users to reserve parking in advance for popular venues across Miami, such as sports events and concerts. The goal is to remove the guesswork from parking so that visitors can focus on enjoying the event instead of hunting for a spot. With SpotHero, users can book parking spaces ahead of time, ensuring they have a reserved place waiting for them. This approach saves drivers from circling crowded areas, potentially reducing congestion and stress.

Diaz envisions a simple, reliable experience where people can plan their trips without worrying about parking availability or fluctuating fees. An ideal parking experience is one where people don’t even think about it. They park, enjoy their event, and leave without hassle. For example, fans driving from Kendall to a Miami Heat game could use SpotHero to secure a garage spot near the stadium. The app will display all relevant details, such as location and price, making the process easy and efficient.

Initially, SpotHero’s services will be available in limited areas, as the Miami Parking Authority wants to thoroughly test the technology in select garages before expanding it citywide. This phased rollout is meant to address any technical issues, ensuring smooth, reliable service in all future locations.

Angel Diaz on the impact and future expansion across Miami

The collaboration with SpotHero marks a significant improvement for the Miami Parking Authority, which previously attempted to manage reservations through its own website. “Our IT department invested heavily in building our reservation system, but traction was minimal,” Diaz noted. SpotHero’s nationwide reputation and marketing capabilities have increased awareness and engagement, with a growing number of Miami residents reserving spots. Diaz admits that SpotHero’s reach and infrastructure have freed up our resources, allowing us to focus on other priorities.

As SpotHero gains traction, Miami Parking Authority has plans to expand this reservation system to parks, marinas, and other county-managed locations. According to Diaz, “We’re excited to look into using SpotHero at city parks and marinas, where we oversee parking.” The Authority may also explore partnerships with other cities, like Doral, to further extend this parking solution to the broader Miami-Dade area.

Through this collaboration, Angel Diaz sees SpotHero’s technology making Miami’s parking system more accessible and efficient. While Miami Parking Authority is monitoring reservation data to assess usage and growth, Diaz hints that the positive response has encouraged them to continue adding locations as demand rises.
