As summer comes to a close and many start preparing for the beginning of another school year, Amigos for Kids made sure to distribute some back-to-school essentials in under-resourced communities. As part of their initiative, the organization hopes to provide hundreds of children throughout Miami-Dade County with backpacks, school supplies, uniforms, and other essentials.
Over the last 30 years, Amigos for Kids has been committed to helping thousands of children start the year strong by providing them the tools and supplies they need for the classroom. This initiative will impact hundreds of families and members of under-resourced communities.
The Blue Backpack Project is one of the longest-running free school supply initiatives in South Florida. The incredible initiative reduces the financial burdens on parents and teachers with the help of sponsors, donors, and volunteers. Some of the money raised for this project also serves the organization to provide after-school programs in the community. These after-school spaces are a huge advantage for the families in the community, as they provide safe places for the kids and offer academic support and enrichment activities.
As executive director of the organization, Karina Pavone said, “Financial struggles are a risk factor for child abuse, so as part of our mission, we are deeply committed to helping families by providing concrete support during times of need. Even small actions such as providing a backpack, school supplies, and uniforms can make all the difference.”
This year these efforts are especially appreciated by members of the community, as so many have faced additional financial drawbacks due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The sponsors that are helping make the project a success include Baptist Health South Florida, Wells Fargo, Greenburg Traurig, Macy’s, and PNC.
Amigos for Kids is a non-profit organization founded in 1991. The organization's mission is to prevent child abuse and neglect by showing value to the children, strengthening families, and educating communities. The way they move their mission forward is through education, awareness, and advocacy programs. With help from its generous partners, individuals, and volunteers, they will continue to make a significant difference in the community.
