On June 7, 2017 Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez made a statement regarding the new development agreement with Amazon.com, Inc
I thank the Board of County Commissioners for supporting the leasing of property at Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport to the Carrie Meek Foundation and to Amazon.com, Inc. This has resulted in a public-private partnership that has secured a commitment from Amazon to establish a distribution project in our community, create jobs, and further diversify our local economy.
The Seattle-based electronic commerce company is synonymous with affordable products, customer satisfaction, and fast shipping. By moving into space at our Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport, the ease of deliveries and distribution will increase tremendously.
In addition to the economic development this distribution project will bring to the County, over 1,000 new full-time permanent jobs are projected to come with it. Amazon will initially develop 91 acres at the airport in order to build a state-of-the-art distribution facility. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2018. The company will also pay the Miami-Dade Aviation Department approximately $102,000 in rent per month, $1.2 million each year.
Amazon is one of the most successful companies in the world; therefore, I am not surprised that they would like to set-up-shop in Miami-Dade. More and more big-name companies are investing locally and bringing new business -- and new jobs -- to our County. It is also further evidence of our commitment to diverse the economy so that our 2.7 million residents will have additional opportunities for employment.
I look forward to welcoming Amazon.com, Inc. to our world-class community.
