A decade of Art of Black Miami: Reflecting on a transformative cultural journey

How Art of Black Miami celebrated artists, strengthened communities, and promoted cultural tourism

The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) celebrated 10 years of Art of Black Miami (AOBM), a cultural initiative that began as a seasonal event and evolved into a year-round program. Initially launched in Miami’s heritage neighborhoods, including Little Haiti, Little Havana, and Historic Overtown, AOBM grew into a countywide effort spotlighting the city’s connection to the Black diaspora.

Over the past decade, Art of Black Miami transformed from a localized celebration into a platform that elevated Black and Afro-Latino artists, promoting equity in the arts and creating economic opportunities for local businesses. Renowned artists such as Sanford Biggers, Basil Watson, and Deborah Roberts contributed to AOBM’s success, helping solidify Miami’s reputation as a global hub for vibrant cultural expression.

Elevating artists and local businesses

Art of Black Miami consistently aimed to connect Miami’s artistic talent with broader audiences while fostering economic growth. Through its events, the initiative showcased works that told the stories of the region’s multicultural heritage. These efforts amplified the voices of underrepresented artists, offering them recognition and opportunities for growth.

Local businesses also benefited significantly. AOBM events increased their visibility, attracting both residents and tourists who engaged with Miami’s thriving art scene. By linking cultural programming with economic development, the initiative ensured that the momentum of its impact continued year-round. Additionally, the GMCVB provided resources and education to small businesses, enabling them to harness the benefits of the cultural economy. This collaborative approach strengthened Miami-Dade County’s neighborhoods as destinations for cultural tourism and created sustained economic activity.

Expanding cultural outreach

The 10th-anniversary celebrations of Art of Black Miami, held during the 2024–2025 season, featured an impressive lineup of exhibitions and events. Deborah Roberts, whose work is showcased in globally recognized collections like the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Brooklyn Museum, headlined the celebrations. Her thought-provoking art, along with contributions from other established and emerging artists, engaged audiences deeply and underscored the power of creative storytelling.

The AOBM podcast series, launched in 2021 and now in its fourth season, was another milestone in the program’s history. The podcast offered a platform for local artists to share their journeys and highlight how Miami’s cultural vibrancy influenced their work. Available on major streaming platforms, it extended the reach of AOBM’s mission, further promoting Miami as a year-round cultural destination.

Through these efforts, the GMCVB demonstrated its commitment to celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Black diaspora while driving economic opportunities for the city’s diverse communities. The 10th-anniversary season not only reflected on past achievements but also set the stage for continued growth and cultural innovation.

The success of Art of Black Miami has not only elevated the city’s cultural reputation but also strengthened community bonds. By partnering with local businesses, the initiative has created a platform that supports Miami's creative economy year-round. These collaborations have fueled economic growth, allowing small businesses to gain visibility while showcasing the rich heritage and artistic talent of the region. As AOBM continues to evolve, its impact resonates beyond the arts, contributing to the lasting vitality of Greater Miami’s neighborhoods and solidifying the city as a premier cultural destination.
