The Miami Marlins hoped to have a greater shot at victory under their new manager
Opening Day was a big deal for baseball fans in Miami and was almost like a federal holiday. Every season, players come in with a clean slate and the same shot at glory. On Thursday March 30th the Miami Marlins and New York Mets played the first game of the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) season at loanDepot Park. Sandy Alcantara, the Marlins' ace and the uncontested winner of this year's Cy Young Award, hoped to hit the mound to maintain his best scoring streak to date.
Who opened for the Mets?
Alcantara was scheduled to face off against Max Scherzer, who, in 145.1 innings last year, had a 2.29 ERA and 173 strikes. But on Thursday afternoon, the Mets revealed that Verlander had been positioned on the IL with a low-grade strain of the teres major. They had not yet revealed who would commence for the Mets in place of Verlander on Opening Day which ended up being Max Scherzer.
Scherzer (1-0) who won Thursday, allowed three runs and four hits with two walks in six innings against the Marlins. He hit a six. Scherzer briefly gave up the lead late in heat six after a homer by Garrett Cooper in two heats, but Brandon Nimmo hit back early in heat seven to lead the future Hall of Famer back to victory. The goal was saved by David Robertson. Scherzer had 14 hits and 13 swings in 91 shooting, so he's looking forward to the challenge of leading the Mets. Rotation while Justin Verlander is sidelined due to a low-grade teres major strain.
The Miami Marlins take on a new manager
The Miami Marlins were led for the first time by new manager Skip Schumaker. He replaced Don Mattingly, the club's all-time leader in wins and games managed, as the Marlins' manager in October, making him the 16th in franchise history. Schumaker has shown that he is prepared to implement a championship mentality into the Marlins. The team hasn't made the playoffs since 2020, but they have high hopes for Schumaker's tenure.
Last Thursday, the Marlins took to their official Twitter to reveal their Opening Day starting lineup. The first pitch was scheduled for 4:10 p.m., marking the return of baseball to South Florida, unfortunately it did not bring home a win.
