Despite the travel warning DeSantis says he won’t waste his time on such “stunts” by the NAACP
The NAACP branch in Florida is at odds with Governor Ron DeSantis. In light of the governor's policies and their effects on minorities, the civil rights group recommends issuing a travel warning or advice against visiting the state.
The Florida NAACP branch met in Orlando on Saturday, where they unanimously resolved to request the travel warning and advisory from the organization's national board. In 2017, the NAACP issued a similar advice for the state of Missouri owing to its discriminatory practices.
Why the NAACP is voting for a travel warning
Governor Ron DeSantis, who is widely speculated to launch a presidential bid in 2024, has made several of these issues priorities in his administration, prompting this response. According to Yvette Lewis, president of the NAACP in Hillsborough County, previous legislative sessions have also seen attempts to erode the rights of people of color and other vulnerable groups.
These have occurred as a result of the unlawful arrest and conviction of voters, reconfiguration of districts that split up historically Black voting areas, and whitewashing of history in public schools. The situation, she says, is serious, and she believes that a history of oppression will repeat itself, so she is hopeful that the advisory will draw nationwide attention to the issue.
More on Governor DeSantis’ discriminatory policies
Isaiah Rumlin, head of the NAACP branch in Jacksonville, Florida, cited some of DeSantis's moves that have restricted opportunities for discussions of race in the state's public schools. Critics fear the Stop WOKE legislation will require schools to whitewash the nation's dark racial history, and DeSantis blocked a new AP course on African American studies.
Also, the governor established an elections police team that has primarily targeted people of color in Florida's voting process. He is also attempting to have all diversity, equality, and inclusion initiatives at Florida institutions terminated.
