For decades pro wrestling has entertained fans young and old have enjoyed the weekly, eccentric, lively, and sometimes comical shows these professional entertainers bring to us. This Sunday August 5th American Airlines Arena was host to the WWE Summer Tour which included names like Randy Orton, to the World Heavyweight Champion Jinder Mahal.
I was one of those kids that enjoyed many Saturday afternoons next to my grandfather watching wrestling. The cast of characters included such personas as Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, Sting, and of course Hulk Hogan. Some wrestlers come from ancestors of wrestlers such as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The Rock's father (Rocky Johnson) was part of the golden age of wrestling right alongside Dusty Rhodes and Sting. The Rock used to attend wrestling venues with his father and he knew that was something he wanted to do when he grew up. Now he is one of the largest paid actors on the planet. Those were the days... Wrestling has changed so much since then. Some of these names still appear in the meet and greet at different locations around the world but for the most part they are retired. Just last month I had the honor of meeting "The Icon, The Show Stopper, The Franchise, Sting", without a doubt my personal favorite.
I think it is safe to say that the wrestling we are referring to here is basically a series of orchestrated enactments aimed to please the crowd. Much to their credit they did just that on Sunday August 6th.Despite the obvious orchestration of events, sometimes things don't go as planned. Many wrestlers have lost their lives performing for us. Owen Hart lost his life while falling from an elevated location during his match on live television. Owen came from an extensive line of wrestlers most notably brother of Bret the Hit Man Hart. Sometimes even the most scripted of events can tragically take an unexpected turn. I have witnessed several of these events live and you can understand how sometimes moves just don't go as expected. These entertainers suffer debilitating injuries to their back, neck, shoulders, etc. enough to push them into retirement. Sting for example was forced to retire because of a debilitating neck injury caused by a match at WrestleMania.
Regardless of the cons this spectacle is worth watching. The color, drama, and plethora of personalities are enough to keep the young and old entertained for hours on end.
If you have not witnessed these incredible shows, don't hesitate to get tickets and check it out. Take your kids, grandkids, family members and enjoy the fun. There is plenty to take in.
I think you will enjoy the 1, 2, 3 from the referee as you watch your favorites take the title!
