The Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts in Miami Dade County is awarding 30 performing artists with $1,000 through the "Heart of Art" project and here’s what you need to know before submitting your work
The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami Dade County has created the “Heart of Art,” an online commission project that will award 30 individual performing artists $1,000 to create new works of art that focus on the topic “art in the time of the coronavirus” and represent the voices of Miami Dade County.
The first online commissioning program in Miami Dade County, Heart of Art was created not only to inspire artists to create new work during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also to provide a virtual stage for artists to capture the Miami community’s unique experience during the pandemic. Artists from a variety of genres are able to submit work, including but not limited to spoken word, music, theater, and dance.
Heart of Art was created to be an “artistic time capsule” of Miami’s pandemic experience, so the submissions are open to residents of Miami Dade County exclusively. The winning video works will be showcased on the Arsht Center’s website and social media platforms, as well as in the Arsht@Home electronic newsletter.
Submissions are being accepted until August 21. Requirements include a short 2-minute video preview of your performance (view previously-submitted video proposals here), a 100-word biography, a high-quality headshot, a 250-word description of the work you are submitting, and your website and/or social media handles. The criteria requires that artists focus on the topic “art in the time of the coronavirus” and submit original work so that Miami’s artistic voices are highlighted and can connect the community during this time.
Once the preview videos are submitted, the Arsht Center team will review them and notify the artist within 48 hours of the submission if they were selected for the $1,000 commission. The choses artists have seven days to submit the full video of their performance, which should be no more than 15 minutes long. Then, commissions will be published on the Arsht Center media platforms on a weekly basis throughout the summer.
The Arsht Center started this program because the community has seen many videos of artists creating content that is inspiring creativity around the world and demonstrating “the healing power of artistic expression.” Heart of Art aims to give Miami creators this same power, in addition to amplifying the voice of the Miami community during this pandemic.
“[Art] has the power to bring people together while being asked to remain apart. It has the power to alleviate pain and produce alternatives of escapism for humanity,” reads the Heart of Art section of the Arsht Center’s website.
“At the ‘heart of art’ are the artists who create hope and beauty out of a time of despair.”
