Commissioner Eileen Higgins hosts food distribution

Commissioner Eileen Higgins teams up with Miami-Dade Parks and the Miami Marlins to give food to families in need

Starting May 13 and continuing on two additional days, May 20 and May 27, District 5 Commissioner Eileen Higgins, in a collaboration with Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, the Miami Marlins Foundation and Farm Share in Little Havana, will be hosting a food distribution event at Marlins Park. 

While supplies last, the distribution will include fresh meals and nonperishables served on a first come, first serve basis starting at 1 p.m. on all three days. The distribution events are drive-thru only, and residents should arrive early to assure that they have an opportunity to get the essentials they need. Everyone must wear a mask and be prepared to remain in their vehicles and be ready to open their trunk when it is their turn to receive food. 

It is encouraged that residents be mindful of the City of Miami curfew when lining up for food to assure that the curfew is still followed. The curfew was implemented for the safety of all residents, in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus. These efforts must still be followed during these distribution events.

The events will take place on the east side of Marlins Park, in the Humana Lot which is located at 1390 NW 5^th Street. Drivers can enter the location by heading east on NW 7^th avenue and heading south on NW 14^th avenue. 

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many families are facing hardships due to a loss of jobs in their household and therefore an evident presence of financial instability. This instability makes it difficult for families, big or small, to buy groceries and essentials to keep their families fed, healthy, and safe. 

Commissioner Higgins, Miami-Dade County Parks, the Marlins Foundation, and Farm Share are therefore presenting a solution to this issue by creating these food distribution events which are sure to ease some family’s stress and anxiety during this time. 

“Those recently unemployed and families in low-income communities are facing food insecurity like never before,” said Commissioner Higgins. “I thank the Marlins, Farm Share and Miami-Dade Parks for their shared commitment to help families put food on the table during these challenging times.”
