Home Plate Meals Relief Fund created by the Miami Marlins helps combat food security issues during COVID-19
On April 2, the Miami Marlins Foundation launched the Home Plate Meals Relief Fund, investing $100,000 towards urgent food security issues that are present in South Florida due to the coronavirus (COVID-19).
Florida Blue, a partner of Miami Marlins, added $50,000 to the funds, bringing the total to $150,000, which will be immediately invested into the South Florida community. The Miami Marlins Foundation is partnering with Feeding South Florida to launch a drive-thru food distribution program that would operate weekly in April.
Around 200,000 meals will be provided to families at a public school in Liberty City and Little Havana. Home Plate Meals Relief Fund is scheduling additional relief efforts in the coming weeks.
In addition to the relief fund, the Marlins have committed $1 million to assisting gameday staff with their lost wages due to COVID-19. The Marlins and Miami Marlins Foundation also launched a website, called Billy’s Activity Zone, which provides fun, educational activities for families.
Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter says it is times like these that the Marlins are dedicated to serving the community. “We wanted to provide direct support to our local community by addressing food security and help deliver proper nutrition to South Florida households.”
“We are thankful for a partner like Florida Blue for seeing the value in our Foundation’s program and joining our effort to contribute...”

Florida Blue market president Penny Shaffer seconds this, adding that families are facing tremendous economic, health and safety issues due to COVID-19.
“Florida Blue is proud to support communities and efforts across the state during this pandemic, and to work with the Marlins Foundation to ensure our neighbors in need do not go hungry,” said Shaffer.
