Cuba’s Communist Dictatorship Suspends International Flights after requests from Mayor Gimenez
Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez has previously sent letters to President Trump and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to request a suspension of flights to Cuba from the United States due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Miami-Dade County is Cuba’s largest international flights market, and thus posed a threat due to possible COVID-19 carriers.
Approximately 1.3 million passengers fly between Cuba and Miami annually, with many flights from the island to Miami International Airport daily. For the safety of the citizens of Miami-Dade County and all of Florida, as of April 2, Mayor Gimenez’s requests were fulfilled.
As of April 2, the Cuban government ceased all international flights. Mayor Gimenez was relieved by this decision.
“I am pleased that Cuban government has responded to pressure from the United States to suspend all of its international flights, which included daily flights arriving in Miami-Dade County,” said the mayor.
Mayor Gimenez continued by saying that this suspension of international flights will help stop the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus. However, Mayor Gimenez notes that this was not easy, due to Cuba’s form of government.
“Unfortunately, Cuba’s communist dictatorship has a long history of providing untrustworthy information filled with inaccuracies to the public,” said Mayor Gimenez.
As for U.S. citizens who are currently in Cuba but whose main residence is in the United States, the U.S. Embassy in Cuba is advising immediate return. If returning is not an option, those U.S. citizens must be prepared to remain in Cuba for an indefinite amount of time. U.S. citizens with plans to travel to Cuba in the near feature must postpone their visits.
