Luis Angelo Martin Selected as a Semifinalist for the Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship
The Jack Kent Cook Foundation announced that Luis Angelo Martin, a student at the Miami Dade Honors College, was named a semi-finalist for its community college transfer scholarship.
Martin was selected from a group of over 1,500 applicants attending 311 community colleges in 45 states and the District of Columbia. According to Martin, only 456 students were selected as semifinalists this year.
Venezuelan born residing in Miami, Martin holds a 3.9 GPA and is a Dual Language Scholar at Miami Dade Honors College. He was selected to represent the Eduardo J. Padron Campus at the Induction Ceremony of Miami Dade Honors College class of 2021, held at the Olympia Theater. At the ceremony, he delivered a speech in Spanish.
Martin’s resume is packed with achievements, including being the managing director and co-founder of Venexodo, a humanitarian assistance festival that is held annually. He has also been awarded a winning place from the National Competition Business Ethics presentation from Phi Beta Lambda held in San Antonio, Texas.
Needless to say, Martin is adding his semifinalist position to a long list of achievements.
The qualities that Martin possesses are exactly what the foundation looks for. According to a press release from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, Cooke Transfer Scholars are selected based on academic ability and achievement, financial need, persistence, service to others, and leadership.
The foundation also says that they are proud to be awarding students with semifinalist positions who have much potential.
“Year after year, we are impressed by the incredible talent and resolve of community college students,” said Seppy Basili, executive director of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. The foundation awards the hard work community college students put into their education.
In April, the Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship recipients will be announced. Each scholar will receive financial support for up to three years, comprehensive education advising, and the chance to connect with fellow Cooke scholars.
This award is what Martin was striving for when going through the insightful and rewarding application process.
“I desired to give each question the necessary amount of commitment to project the most significant life experiences that shaped me as the individual I am today,” said Martin.
Being rewarded the semifinalist position has been an opportunity that Martin is immensely grateful for. According to Martin, this honorary mention has helped new opportunities grow for his future.
“This mention has served as motivation for my chance to look forward to continuing my commitment to higher ideals, ventures, and academics,” Martin said, adding that he owes much of his success to his professors, the Miami Dade Honors College, and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. These were all a key part of his support system.
