Marco Rubio is asking for an investigation of the jetty where Jose Fernandez died
On September 25, Jose Fernandez one of the most loved Miami Marlins pitcher and two other friends, died in a terrible boat accident. The 24-year-old star together with Emilio Macias (27 years old) and Eduardo Rivero (25 years old) were travelling with high-speed (between 55 and 65 miles per hour) when the boat hit the jetty. After that, the boat flipped over and crashed upon the rocks. The three men died because of the impact and trauma, not because of drowning. A further investigation is on the run.
"It does appear that speed was involved due to the impact and the severity of it. It does appear to be that they were coming at full speed when they encountered the jetty, and the accident happened," said the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Lorenzo Veloz.
The U.S. Senator Marco Rubio asked the Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers to examine the safety of the rock jetty. He also said that the jetty is a real danger for boaters especially at night when the visibility is low.
The navigational aids meant to guide boats away from the jetty at the mouth of Miami's port were working when the accident happened early Sunday. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is also investigating the crash.
A public memorial service was held yesterday, September 28, for Jose Fernandez at St. Brendan Catholic Church. The private funeral will be held today for the Fernandez family and Marlins players and personnel.
Jose Fernandez left behind him a beautiful four months pregnant girlfriend, his heartbroken family and fans and a successful career.
Our condolences go to the grieving families and friends of all three men involved in the tragic accident.
