Celebrities, media personalities, and filmmakers have loved the city for decades, making dozens of movies in Miami
Miami is one of the most famous cities in the world and has some of the most incredible landscapes and offerings, which is why it comes as no surprise that it has been featured in many films and TV shows.
The city’s incredible architecture, history, and amazing beaches are some of the reasons why it’s such a favorite for on-screen productions and movies in Miami.
Some movies in Miami we are including are the following:
Scarface (1983)
“The eyes, chico. They never lie.”
This iconic line from Scarface maybe its identifying feature, but it’s also hard to miss the scenic cityscapes featuring Miami’s amazing architecture. The movie, starring Al Pacino, was set in Florida during the 1980s and centers around the zenith and nadir of a Cuban-American gangster in what is arguably one of the most legendary gangster movies to date. It was shot around South Beach (SoBe) and at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach Hotel.
The Birdcage (1996)
This is a must-see movie because it features some incredibly talented individuals, including the late and great Robin Williams. Set in Miami, it’s a progressive film considering the time of its release and centers around a same-sex couple who owns a nightclub and does drag in SoBe. When their son invites his conservative in-laws to town, they’re forced to put on a facade, and hilarity ensues. Emotional, funny, poignant, and packed with talent, this movie is a must-watch for anyone who hasn’t already seen it.
Plus, it’s Nathan Lane and Robin Williams together—who wouldn’t dig that?
2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)
Another fan favorite is 2 Fast 2 Furious, the 2003 installment of the popular franchise. Based in Miami, the film features plenty of iconic locations across the city, including Bayside Marketplace, Downtown Miami, Freedom Tower, New World Tower, and the American Airlines Arena. Incidentally, it’s the only movie from the franchise that doesn’t feature Vin Diesel but has much of the original cast, including late actor Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, and others. It’s definitely a must-watch if you’re into fast cars and beautiful views of Miami at night.
Marley and Me (2008)
Need a good cry and emotional release? Grab that tub of ice cream, your favorite snacks, and sit down to watch Marley and Me. This on of the movies in Miami explores Jennifer Anniston and Owen Wilson’s journey as new pet owners before a heartbreaking plot twist. It’s been shot at several Florida locations, such as West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Miami, and Dolphin Stadium. It’s a movie that will tug at the heartstrings and keep you engaged and enjoying yourself too.
Moonlight (2016)
For something relatively more recent, we have Moonlight. The film is quite dramatic and challenges your perception of not just one of the movies in Miami but key themes in the film. It’s incredibly well-made and well-acted and deserves the accolades and appreciation it has received. However, please be aware that it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, so watch it with caution.
