2024 Miami Latino Art Beat just around the corner: Spotlight on youth talent and Hispanic pride

Celebrating young artists and Hispanic culture with over $5 million in scholarships awarded to date

Miami is gearing up to host the 2024 Miami Latino Art Beat Youth Awards & Exhibit, an annual event celebrating the creative talents of the city’s young artists. Set for October 24, this year’s awards and exhibit will be held at Miami City Hall and the Miami Hyatt Regency Hotel. The event will recognize student winners of the 2024 Art & Film Competition, who have expressed their unique perspectives on the theme, "What Hispanic Heritage & Culture Means to Me."

Latino Art Beat is a long-standing Florida-based nonprofit organization focused on supporting youth in the arts. By offering scholarships and hosting this competition, they encourage young artists to explore their cultural identities and pursue higher education. The organization, now in its 26th year, has awarded more than $5 million in scholarships, helping countless aspiring artists achieve their dreams. This year’s competition in Miami continues to foster creativity, community engagement, and cultural pride among the city's youth.

Recognizing Miami’s top youth artists

This year’s first-place winner is Frank Garcia from the New World School of the Arts. Garcia, along with other top winners like Megan Diaz from Miami Senior High, Alexa Diaz from Washington Senior High, and Angeline Martinez from Doral Academy, will be honored in an awards ceremony at Miami City Hall on October 24. These students will be acknowledged by Mayor Francis X. Suarez, Miami City Commissioners, and the President of Latino Art Beat, Don Rossi Nuccio, during a special presentation.

The winning artwork will be displayed in the lobby of Miami City Hall from October 24 to October 28, giving the public an opportunity to see these students' powerful depictions of Hispanic heritage. Following the City Hall ceremony, the winners, their families, teachers, and school officials are invited to a reception at the Miami Hyatt Regency Hotel from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM, where light refreshments will be served, and a photo-op will take place. This gathering provides a great opportunity for the Miami community to come together and celebrate the artistic accomplishments of its youth.

The 2024 competition winners are not only recognized for their talent but also for their dedication to celebrating their Hispanic heritage through art. This year’s honorees include Amelia McKay from South Miami Senior High, Jemmy Suray from Varela Senior High, and Hans Kunzle from Doral Academy, all of whom showcased exceptional creativity in their work. Their contributions add depth to the ongoing conversation about the role of art in preserving cultural heritage.

Latino Art Beat's broader impact

Since its inception, Latino Art Beat has expanded beyond Miami, reaching other cities and even crossing international borders. The program’s president, Don Rossi Nuccio, has traveled across the country this year to recognize local winners in places like New York, Washington, D.C., and Havana, Cuba. Latino Art Beat is more than just a local initiative; it has grown into a nationwide movement that uses art as a tool for cultural celebration and educational advancement.

For 26 years, Latino Art Beat has fostered youth creativity while promoting the importance of heritage and higher education. The organization’s efforts have helped thousands of young artists, like this year’s Miami winners, take significant steps toward fulfilling their academic and professional dreams. By providing a platform to showcase their work and offering financial support, Latino Art Beat ensures that these students’ artistic voices are heard.

As Miami continues to celebrate Hispanic heritage, the Miami Latino Art Beat Youth Awards & Exhibit remains a significant cultural event that unites the community in its appreciation for art, heritage, and education. It highlights the vital role of art in cultural expression and in helping young people connect with their roots.
