Strengthen your mother-daughter relationship through exercise

There’s a new trend coming alive and that is bonding with your mother through yoga and pilates classes. Our friends from Hot Yoga House Miami noticed this trend of adult daughters bringing their mothers to the classes. They also observed the presence of a great energy when families are working together, so they decided to find out what the trend was about.

Until Mother’s Day, we will tell you the stories of daughters and mothers who decided to join yoga and pilates classes together, hoping that the interviews will inspire other moms and daughters to come try for themselves.

We all know that staying active has a million benefits for everyone, especially for older people, and here we can include healthier joints, healthier bones, improved heart health, enhanced mobility, better respiratory control, and better sleep. Beside the physiological aspect, working out together will coordinate your actions, leading to nonverbal matching which helps people feel emotionally attuned with one another.

The first interview will explore the thoughts, challenges, and results of Lisa Alvarez (mother) and Sofia Alvarez (daughter), so let’s see what they have to say.

Interview with mom

Hot Yoga House: When your daughter invited you, did you hesitate?
Lisa Alvarez: Yes, I thought I would be the oldest and most out of shape and that I would not be able to handle the heat and everyone would judge me.

H.Y.: What changes have you seen in yourself since starting?
L.A.: I find that when I am stressed I tend to center myself and breathe.

H.Y: What pose/class are you most surprised you can do so well?
L.A.: Bikram is still my favorite class. I find that the heat is a mental thing and that afterward I do feel better.

H.Y.: Anything else you’d like to add?
L.A.: I love my yoga classes because my instructors are like family. They truly care about me and my physical and mental well-being. It’s like coming home.

Interview with daughter

Hot Yoga House: What benefits did you want your mom to get from yoga and pilates?
Sofia Alvarez: I wanted my mom to receive the same benefits that I was receiving in my practice. Yoga & Pilates have definitely made me stronger and I have seen the same changes in her. At first the idea of being in a hot room for 60-90 minutes doing the same postures seemed difficult, but the routine helps you advance your practice through repetition. The stronger you become in your practice the more determined and focused you become, which you can also apply to your daily life.

H.Y.: What changes have you seen in her since she started?
S.A.: Flexibility, strength, and cardio.

H.Y.: What pose/class are you most surprised she can do so well?
S.A.: Eagle Pose/ Bikram.

H.Y.: Anything else you’d like to add?
S.A.: –
