Works of art instead of commercials on Metrobuses in Miami

What do we often see on the sides of buses? That’s right, commercials. Advertisements are everywhere and it should be really nice if we could change our view and see something else, like works of art.

Miami-Dade County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) and The New Tropic announced the Transit Loves the Arts challenge. Through this announcement, the local artists are encouraged to apply and submit original works of art that could end up on one of Miami-Dade County’s Metrobuses.

“Some of our Metrorail and Metromover stations already play host to plenty of works of art. So taking the art off the walls and onto our moving buses will be an extra treat for everyone who sees these buses,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez.

The challenge is part of a collaboration between DTPW and The New Tropic declared in July of this current year.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the creative ways in which our artistic riders and residents interpret transit in Miami-Dade County,” said DTPW Director, Alice N. Bravo, P.E. “Ideally, applicants will submit work that will look great in motion and on the road.”

“We’re excited about this creative way to promote transit and improve mobility in Miami-Dade County while at the same time benefiting our community with this sort of moving museum using our Metrobuses and the help of our friends at The New Tropic,” added Bravo.

Artists can submit their work online via thenewtropic.com/transit-loves-arts from now until Monday, September 19, at 5 p.m. EST. There will be selected three winners and they will receive a cash prize of $500 from The New Tropic and also their design will be printed and wrapped around an entire Metrobus. Select runners up will receive a $100 cash prize, as well as have their artwork published on a bus back.

“We see a big opportunity to bring local art into the transit experience, and use those spaces as new canvasses for expression and conversation. This contest is a first step towards doing just that, and we’re delighted to host it,” said Chris Sopher, CEO and co-founder of WhereBy.Us.

The winners will be revealed at the Sounds From the Underground event on Thursday, September 29. Details for this secret event, co-hosted by the Prism Creative Group, will be revealed via Miami-Dade Transit Tracker app. Visit bit.ly/SoundsFromTheUnderground_MDT for more information.
